Marine Diesel Engine – MAN

In 1897, German engineer Rudolf Diesel invented the world’s first diesel engine at the MAN diesel engine company’s Augsburg factory. In 1898, Rudolf Diesel granted a license to the Danish company B&W (Burmeister & Wain A/S) to produce diesel engines. Founded in 1846, Danish B&W was a large shipyard and a leading diesel engine manufacturer. The diesel engine manufacturing division of the company was acquired by the German MAN Group in 1980 and renamed to MAN B&W Diesel A/S. In 2006, to better integrate its diesel engine business in Germany, Denmark, France, and the UK, the German MAN Group restructured MAN B&W Diesel AG into MAN Diesel Company.

MAN Diesel Company mainly designs, develops, produces marine diesel engines, diesel generators for power plants, turbochargers, propellers, and more. The production of MAN’s two-stroke diesel engines is concentrated in Copenhagen, Denmark, while the production of medium-speed diesel engines is distributed across Germany, Denmark, the UK, and France. The high-speed engine division of MAN primarily produces diesel engines, light fuel and gas fuel engines, dual-fuel engines, power generation equipment, mechanical drives, and rail traction equipment. The turbocharger division of MAN is located in Augsburg, Germany.

In 2010, MAN Diesel SE merged with MAN Turbo AG to form MAN Diesel & Turbo SE. In July 2018, the company announced a name change to MAN Energy Solutions, headquartered in Augsburg, Germany, producing large-diameter diesel engines and turbines for marine and stationary applications, such as ship propulsion systems, power plant applications, and turbochargers. It is one of the world’s leading suppliers of large-diameter diesel engines for marine and stationary applications and turbo machinery.

Key marine products of MAN:

  1. MAN B&W two-stroke engines, with a cylinder diameter ranging from 30 to 95 cm, have a total power range of 3,200 kW to 82,440 kW.
  2. MAN four-stroke marine engines for ship propulsion and diesel power equipment with power ratings from 700 kW to 19,200 kW.
  3. Turbochargers for diesel engines and gas engines with power ratings from 600 kW to 30,000 kW.
  4. Propeller and stern thruster solutions.
