The Nine Major Diesel Engine Brands of China

2024-02-07

China's diesel engine manufacturing industry has been thriving with the deepening of the reform and opening up policy. Many enterprises have matured in technology and expanded in scale under the support of national policies and the incentive of the market economy, with their products being sold both domestically and internationally. Within this industry, a number of leading enterprises have emerged. With innovative technology, stable product quality, and excellent service systems, they have gained widespread recognition in the market.

WEICHAI: Founded in 1946, it is the largest auto parts enterprise group in China, with business platforms in whole vehicles and engines, powertrains, luxury yachts, and auto parts. It is the only company group in China that has a complete industry chain including power systems (engine, transmission, axles), heavy-duty vehicles, automotive electronics, and components. The company specializes in developing, manufacturing, and selling medium and high-speed diesel engines from 30 to 12,000 horsepower for marine propulsion and power generation equipment markets, as well as power integration systems, while also operating in diesel engine parts, marine gearboxes, and other industries.

YUCHAI: Established in 1951, it is a large modern enterprise group that integrates the engine industry chain with the petrochemical industry chain, conducting diversified related industry operations. It is the most comprehensive internal combustion engine manufacturing base in China. The company has production licenses for Wärtsilä and MAN two-stroke engines, capable of manufacturing the YCMP-WÄRTSILÄ series and YCMP-MAN B&W series of marine low-speed engines. Its products are widely used in various types of ships including bulk carriers, container ships, tankers, and engineering ships. While focusing on marine engines, the company is also vigorously developing marine engineering steel structures, air-droppable power generation units, and other businesses.

XICHAI: Founded in 1943, under the FAW Group, it has leading independent R&D capabilities in China. Its four-valve diesel engines, electronically controlled common-rail diesel engines, and two-stage turbocharged diesel engines are well-known in the industry. XICHAI mainly produces medium and heavy-duty diesel engines ranging from 2 to 13 liters, covering power ranges from 40 to 500 horsepower, mainly used in buses, heavy trucks, construction machinery, and other fields. It currently has two major engine bases, an engine remanufacturing base, and a modified vehicle research base.

QUANCHAI: Started in 1949. Currently, QUANCHAI has formed a power matching system mainly for vehicle use, agricultural equipment use, construction machinery use, and generator set use. It has the R&D and mass production capabilities of National III and IV products, and has passed EU CE and US EPA certifications. Its series of products cover a power range of 20 to 380 horsepower.

Chongqing Cummins: A leading global supplier of power generation systems and related components and services. It is one of the foreign diesel engine companies that localized engine production in China earlier. Cummins' joint ventures or wholly-owned enterprises in China cover engines, generator sets, turbochargers, filters, fuel systems, and other products. Cummins engines in China range from 2.8 to 95 liters, covering a power range from 31 to 4400 horsepower. Cummins Turbo Technologies (formerly Holset): A full range of turbochargers and related products for diesel and natural gas engines over three liters, mainly used in the global commercial vehicle and industrial markets.

SHANGCHAI: Founded in 1947, it is the first enterprise in China to independently design and manufacture diesel engines, now affiliated with the SAIC Group. The company mainly produces diesel engines, natural gas engines, dimethyl ether engines, and hybrid power used in trucks, buses, construction machinery, agriculture, marine, and generator sets, with a power range covering 50 to 1600 kW, reaching Euro IV and Euro V standards. The company has established a 24-hour comprehensive service hotline, ready to serve customers at any time. Upon receiving customer repairs, the first time to reach the scene for repair. According to the situation, it can also carry out assembly, commissioning, inspection, and on-site technical training for relevant personnel.

ChangChai: Begun in 1913, it is an early professional manufacturer of internal combustion engines in China, mainly producing small and medium-power diesel engines. It is a long-established national industrial enterprise. Its products are widely used in transportation vehicles, agricultural machinery, construction machinery, ships, and other fields. Many multi-cylinder diesel engines have passed the US EPA Tier 4 certification and the European Union EC IIIA emission certification.

Yunnei: Started in 1956, it is a high-tech enterprise mainly producing diesel engines and natural gas engines. Its diesel engine products are widely used in both light and heavy-duty fields. Products mainly involve two powertrains, two core technologies, energy-saving materials, new energy vehicles, and agricultural machinery. The company has set up 33 parts agents and more than 800 after-sales service outlets nationwide, and the coverage is vast.

Jichai: CNPC Jichai's core business is the R&D and manufacturing of medium and large power internal combustion engines, with extended businesses including hydraulic transmission devices, electrical control devices, gas power integrated devices, etc. CNPC Jichai, founded in 1920, is one of the earliest diesel engine manufacturers in China. It has internationally advanced internal combustion engine R&D and testing facilities, high flexibility, CNC core component processing equipment, and complete quality testing and physicochemical equipment.

The above rankings are in no particular order. In addition, there are many other diesel engine factories in China, such as Tongchai, Zichai, Hechai, Guangchai, and so on, which are not introduced one by one here.
